Being a music lover, I’m always on the hunt for new audio players that can deliver crisp sound and do justice to my ears as well as my high-end Sony headset. I’ve tried a lot of media players in the past, ranging from Winamp to JetAudio, Media Monkey to MusicBee, and a truckload of others until settling down with iTunes (I know it’s not the best audio player, but it’s great if you own an iOS device). Today, I stumbled upon a unique, feature-limited yet powerful media player called Bonis Audio Player and couldn’t wait to give it a try. Although the developer touts it as equipped with the latest generation audio engine for highest quality sound decoding, I had my doubts until taking it for a test drive myself.

Bonis Audio Player looks simple and minimalistic from top to bottom. There are no fancy graphics for playback control buttons, nor does it boast any snazzy-looking volume knob. The dead simple design may give an image of a very lightweight application but when you play a supported format using the app, it does bog down your system’s performance by taking lots of CPU and memory resources. Speaking of formats, the application can only play FLAC, OGG and WAV files. In case you are baffled by the lack of MP3 support, it’s because the purpose of the app is to play only high-fidelity uncompressed audio, and that’s supported primarily by the aforementioned formats only. It can playback uncompressed, high quality sound without any jitters or lag, though the end results also depend on the type of audio equipment you use.

The usage is fairly straightforward. To open a supported file, click the Load button and then select the source file. There’s no drag and drop feature here, so you’re only left with the classic browsing method. Clicking Play/Pause starts and stops playback respectively. You can also control the playback speed using the Fast and Slow buttons.

There’s also a seek bar to jump to any point in the track. In addition, you can control the volume using the master volume adjuster in the middle. The Pan feature allows you to balance the audio output between right and left channels. Lastly, the application displays visualization effect at the bottom representing right and left channels separately with green and red colors respectively. Other than that, Bonis Audio Player doesn’t have much on offer, but it’s a great tool for flawlessly playing high-quality uncompressed audio files without any loss in the output.

The application is portable and works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Testing was carried out on Windows 8 Pro, 64-bit edition.
