Customize Date Time Displayed On Windows 8 RT Lock Screen Share
PDF Print E-mail

If you frequently change the Lock Screen background on Windows 8 or RT, you’ll probably love spending time customizing it further as well. Lock Screen is a new feature in Microsoft’s latest OS that shows off your favorite image when your Windows 8 PC or Windows RT tablet screen is locked. The Lock Screen does more than just displaying the wallpaper though, and is home to some miniscule widgets like Wi-Fi signal, battery, email notifications and a clock with date display, in addition to time. Windows doesn’t offer a way to customize the clock widget however, leaving you stuck with the stock date and time format. Thanks to Vishal at AskVG, you can now customize the clock widget’s time and date format and language by modifying a registry key.

The screenshot below demonstrates the clock widget of Windows 8 Lock Screen the way it looks by default. If you’re not happy with this default configuration, just follow our step-by-step tutorial to personalize it according to your liking.

Customize Date Time Displayed On Windows 8 RT Lock Screen

Open the Start Screen, type ‘regedit’ (without the quotation marks), and click or tap the ‘regedit’ tile that appears in the results.

The Registry Editor will open in Desktop mode. Now go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemProtectedUserData

The ‘SystemProtectedUserData’ key contains two additional keys named something like ‘S-1-5-21-XXXX-XXX-XXX’. In the first of the two similarly looking keys, go to:

S-1-5-21-XXXX-XXX-XXX\AnyoneRead\LocaleInfo

You must first take ownership of LocalInfo before making any changes. If you already have the ownership, you can skip this step, but if not, right-click or long press LocalInfo and click or tap ‘Permissions’ in the context menu.

Under the Permissions window, enable the Allow check box next to ‘Full Control’ and hit the OK button to apply your changes.

The LocalInfo key contains a list of items in the right pane, each having a string value. These values are associated with different aspects of the clock widget. The highlighted items in the screenshot below i.e. Language, LocaleName and TimeFormat are are the ones that we need to change. The former two items (Language and LocaleName) allow you to modify the language of the day and date display by changing the string. For example you can replace the default language code (en-US as in English) to fr-FR for French. Likewise typing de-DE or ru-RU allows you to change the language code to German or Russian respectively. As long as you’re entering the right code, the changes will be applied automatically.

TimeFormat allows you to change time format of the clock. If you want to change the default 12-hour time format to 24-hour format, simply replace ‘h:mm tt’ with ‘H:mm:tt’.

Changes are applied in real-time. Here’s an example of the Lock Screen clock in 24-hour clock format, with the date in French.
