Scribd Bings Its Mammoth Online Documents Library To iPhone Share

Everyone who has ever done some serious research (and by that, we mean looking beyond Wikipedia) is sure to know all about Scribd. The service boasts of one of the biggest collection of scholarly and other documents, contributed by people from all walks of life. Until now, using Scribd from your iPhone wasn’t easy, as the service didn’t have an iOS app. Fortunately, the official Scribd app for iPhone has been released today, and now you can manage your Scribd account on the go, and even if you are not a registered user of the service, it is possible to use the app to read any document you want. Like the web version of Scribd, the app has a featured section and you can search for any keyword you want, too. It is also possible to maintain your reading lists, and bookmark items right from within the app.

When you launch Scribd for the first time, the Featured section will greet you. The top bar on the main screen can be scrolled horizontally to reveal more documents, while the list view is visible vertically below it. From the Scribd menu, you can go to other sections of the app. To get a more personalized experience, it is better if you login to your Scribd account via Facebook or through an email ID. For all registered Scribd users, there is the option to use the Reading Feed and My Document sections of the app. The Reading Feed area lists all the updates from users you are following, while your personal uploads will appear in the My Documents section.

The reader in Scribd is pretty good, and even has the popular page-turning effect. That animation has to be enabled from the Settings menu of the app. Whenever you open a document in the Scribd app, you can get an overview of it in grid and list modes. Being in grid mode makes navigation really easy if the document has a lot of pages. The search button located in the top bar will let you go to your desired page quickly, while it is also possible to bookmark pages and whole documents. The sharing options offered by Scribd include Twitter and Email.

The Scribd app is a bit disappointing because quite a few features are missing in it. The most significant missing feature is the uploading of documents from your account via the app, and in addition to that, there are a few other areas in which the app will direct you to Scribd’s web version. Having said that, it’s not like the app will cost you anything, and if you own an iPhone, you might want to give Scribd a try. Android users can enjoy about the same functionalities via Scribd Reader, an official document explorer by Scribd.
