You might not have time for it often enough, but it can be a really enriching experience to look back at your social network activities every once in a while. Most users are just concerned with the latest happenings on their timeline, but the fact of the matter is that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and a whole lot of other services maintain records of your every move starting from the time you create your account on them. Apps like Timehop can treat you to a blast from the past every once in a while, but the newly released Memoir can do a lot more in addition to that. The app strives to create a complete database of your memories picked from among the photos on your social network. You can search through this collection of memories, but even if you don’t, Memoir makes sure that you don’t forget the important stuff by coming up with reminders whenever you are with someone who is a part of your memories, or when you visit a place you have been to in the past.

Memoir can’t work unless you grant it access to your iPhone’s local image library and some of the social network accounts you own. The supported services include Facebook, Instagram, and Foursquare. You also have to sign up for a new account for the app by entering your email ID and a new password.

During the initial, one-time setup, it can take Memoir up to two hours to arrange all your photos into a neat collection, so you’ll have to be patient. The app uploads your entire photo cache to its secure and private (according to the developer) servers. One thing we can vouch for is that none of your photos are made public on your social network unless you want to do so.

After the app has finally finished its business, you can either quit it and wait for its notifications, or there is the option of browsing through the social media posts from your past. Memoir generates alerts based on three criteria:

  • Location-based reminders show up whenever you are at a place where you have previously snapped photos.
  • If you post about a friend, or if a friend of yours uses Memoir, the app detects that you are together and generates a list of photos that both you and your friend might have been in.
  • Like Timehop, Memoir tells you of your past activities on any given day. Where it differs from the older app is that you can perform a search for a particular date and get posts related to it.

If you want a timeline view of your photos, hit the calendar icon from the top bar and then scroll down the screen. Each post can be viewed individually, and you can even choose to re-share it with your friends over social media. Memoir has a commenting system of its own, too.

Other than gathering your memories for you, Memoir can be a pretty handy photo sharing tool as well. If you were at an event with one or more of your friends, just invite them to join Memoir and request them to share some of the event’s photos with you so that you can make them your own.

Memoir has a Mac client as well, which can be used to make your photo collection even richer by syncing images from your computer. Even if you don’t want to do that, though, Memoir for iPhone runs pretty well on its own. The app is free, and can be downloaded from the link below.
