Mailnag: Gnome 3 Based Email Notifier For Ubuntu Share
PDF Print E-mail

Mailnag is a Gnome 3-based application for receiving email notifications. While it might appear to be similar in functionality to other applications of it’s kind, such as gm-notify, however, it has many distinct features. These include support for opening emails in default email client, mail notification pop-up, execution of specified script when mail notifications are received, as well as support for both IMAP and POP3.

Although Mailnag has been developed particularly for Gnome 3, you can also use it with Unity desktop environment. Mailnag can be installed from the following PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mailnag

To configure an email account in Mailnag, open configuration wizard and enter your account name, login credentials, and port. If you are using IMAP, you can skip the port section and enable IMAP option instead. For example, to configure Gmail settings, enter login credentials, as your server and enable IMAP option.

Additional configurations can be performed from adjacent tabs, including the option to set a message tray label, message checking time interval, selecting your default mail client, adding words to the spam filter, and optionally, specifying a script or command on mail check.

You will receive pop-up notifications for new emails after your defined time interval, e.g., every 5 minutes. You can click Open in mail reader option from notification dialog box, to open the email in your default mail client.
