Do you still spend most of the day reading comic books? Perhaps it is a good time to trash your collection and move to something more digital. While smartphones and tablets would possibly be the most convenient platform for that but if you want to read them on your Windows desktop or laptop PC, try Genius PDF. Don’t get the name fool you though, because besides PDF files, the application can easily handle various eBook and comic book formats, including the ever-popular EPUB, CBR and CBZ files. It sports a very light, and clean interface, and seems to be faster at opening PDF documents than Adobe Reader.

Genius PDF features a flat out design that looks fairly similar to Adobe Reader. The list of input formats it supports is quite impressive. Besides PDF, EBUB and MOBI, Genius PDF can also let you open DJVU, CBR, CBZ, PNG, JPEG, BMP, TIFF formats etc. Though during testing, I wasn’t able open the supported image formats.

The application handles PDFs like a breeze and lets you zoom in and out of them, find certain text phrases or word via the Find option, or take printouts. You can even open the currently loaded PDF in Adobe Reader straight from its interface from the File menu. The View menu lets you toggle full screen mode and toolbar, and rotate the document either clock or counter clockwise.

On the eBooks front, Genius PDF doesn’t face a hitch opening MOBI files. The interface turns into a flat distraction-free surface and lets you navigate between the pages via either the left and right sliders or by using the scroll keys on your keyboard. The latter option makes navigation considerably easier. The application automatically reflows the text and images when you resize its window, so going full screen is also fairly enjoyable. Genius PDF displays the total number of pages in a MOBI file at the far bottom.

I also tried throwing in a couple of EPUB files and all of them worked as they are supposed to. Another interesting bit about the app is that it allows you to launch multiple instances, so you can easily open a variety of supported files at the same time using the same program.

All in all, it’s a simple and easy to use app. Though I was quite disappointed to find that it couldn’t open any of the supported image extensions. Perhaps this feature is still a work-in-progress. Genius PDF works on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.
